Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes. You can use the power, strength and resources you already possess to gain control over habits, fears, phobias, anxiety, IBS, weight loss, smoking etc.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis occurs when one person guides someone else into a trance state. Trance is generally defined as a state of deep relaxation, heightened concentration and imagination, and suggestibility. Someone who is in trance is always in control of their own mind and body. They can come out of trance at any time that they want or need to. They can choose which suggestions to accept and which to reject.

What is Trance?

Trance is often compared to a deep relaxation or meditation. A light-medium trance is comparable to the level of focussed relaxation achieved when reading a really good book or fully absorbed in a good film. The difference is that, where relaxation and meditation aim to clear the mind, hypnosis aims to focus the mind.

How does Hypnotherapy work?

Hypnotherapy works by helping you to make changes to the choices made by your subconscious mind.

Our subconscious mind is constantly working to keep us safe and well. It makes rapid decisions all day every day to achieve that goal. It keeps us safe from predators and potentially life-threatening situations. What our subconscious mind does not do is think rationally, use logic or memory or have any consideration for the long term consequences of the choices it makes. The subconscious mind makes the best decision it can at the time with the information and options available to it. If the decision works and keeps us safe and well, that decision is reinforced in the subconscious mind. It was a good action. For example, eating chocolate makes me feel good, a cigarette helps me to relax, running away from the dog stopped me feeling scared. Unfortunately the actions it chooses may have unhelpful consequences in the longer term resulting in anxiety, phobias, addictions, weight gain etc.

Hypnotherapy works by helping the subconscious mind to respond differently to a particular situation, enabling you to make the choices you want to make in order to regain control of your life. Hypnotherapy only works when you are truly motivated to make the changes needed in your life, it is not a passive therapy and your success will depend on you taking an active role in the process.
